Meet Tara Bulum Of EcoBub Nappies

My guest today is Tara Bulum. Tara runs three businesses – A Touch Of Harmony, Ecobub Nappies and Business Block Busters. Read and be Inspired by her business success story !!!

Tell us a bit about your business – what you do, when you started and how you got the idea ?

Tara Bulum worked in the corporate world for 20 years in various industries and roles. For about five years of that she worked part-time or in her own business while working full-time for someone else.

Tara is an entrepreneur with three businesses. These are (and the following answers for each will be in the corresponding colours):

A Touch of Harmony (10 years old) – Life Coaching and Self Improvement programs (including book clubs) – started after Tara had volunteered as a counsellor, found she liked it and could incorporate it into some healing work in her own business. From here a natural evolution occurred from client requests that led to Life Coaching and training in topics of personal development. Today this business continues to provide Life Coaching, Health Coaching, Self Improvement programs and book clubs which are largely provided by a great team of Life Coaches.

Ecobub Nappies (3 years old) – environmentally friendly nappies and associated products that are safe for your child and the environment – prior to starting this business Tara had a pretty good awareness of some of the dangerous ingredients in products freely available on the market and an understanding of how they impact everyone’s health, particularly on those who have little or no natural defence systems. She had also made a commitment to herself when in her early twenties to never use disposable nappies on her children that contained dangerous ingredients or negatively impacted the environment.

When Tara became pregnant she endeavoured to find fitted cloth nappies made from natural fibres with no dangerous dyes or other chemicals. During this research she found there was little made in Australia or produced by Australian companies apart from biodegradable disposable nappies made in Germany. Not being able to source much in Australia led Tara to leverage her many years of business experience and launch her own business providing well researched high quality products to the Australian marketplace.

Now there is a place for parents who want quality nappy and associated products that are safe for their child(ren) and the environment. Products include a range of organic cotton cloth fitted nappies; organic cotton cloth wipes, cot sheets, towels, wraps, breast pads; biodegradable disposable nappies and biodegradable wet wipes; baby care products (wash, lotions and sunscreens).

Business Block Busters – (1.5 years old) – Business Mentoring and Coaching, Business Development, Business Management, Professional Development Training and Professional Development Coaching – Tara conducted one of her annual business reviews for A Touch of Harmony and realised that the majority of clients were women (usually Mums) working in their own or family businesses. The issues or aspects that were being worked on were about business and life. It seemed natural to Tara to separate this aspect of her business into a new venture because she realised that it was where she added the most value and gained the greatest satisfaction.

The thing that differentiates Business Block Busters from most business coaching services is that it doesn’t just focus on the nuts and bolts of the business but the skills and motivations of the owner/manager. It uses psychology and other perspectives to focus the business owner on setting and achieving short and long-term goals and dreams.

How do you source your products ?

A Touch of Harmony – the only products it has are books, CD’s and DVD’s that enable clients to achieve their goals or advance their knowledge about themselves. These are sourced from various places, referrals and experiences of what really works and aligns with the philosophies of the business.

Ecobub Nappies prefers Australian-made and Australian businesses and/or Australian made. Products must meet certain criteria such as:

Business Block Busters is currently building a website which will promote our services and have books, CD’s and DVD’s that enable clients to achieve their goals or advance their businesses. We will also offer some free information on this site for small and home based businesses.
These are sourced from various places, referrals and experiences of what really works and aligns with the philosophies of the business.

If you had to start all over again, is there anything you would do differently in your business ?

I would trust my instinct more and engage more with those who support my business goals and ideas. I would also remember that I am only one person and need assistance to achieve my goals, so engage help early on to build websites, undertake marketing and promotions as well as sales. You can’t do all the functions and need to realise that early on to save a lot of angst.

If you had to name one single most valuable tool for you in your business, what would that be ?

The internet is definitely a valuable tool but I also realised that networking is also equally valuable.

What is the smartest bit of marketing you have ever done ?

Building alliances with other like, but not the same businesses. Example – Business Block Busters aligns with a PR company, a printer, a graphic designer.

How many hours do you work each day? Any time management tips you would like to share with us?

I work more than I have to because I love what I do and am on a mission.

The most important management tip I can share is to not try and do everything yourself, if you are not good at something or it is not your priority, get someone to do that task that has that as their priority and does it well.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

Outsourcing to the right people

Engage a Business Coach

Plan ahead to achieve your dreams, so being really clear and detailed about what that is, how it will look and feel

Pay yourself as soon as you start getting money in, even if it starts at 5% of your business income

Show yourself and the Universe you are serious in all that you do by your actions and thinking.

My guest today is Shara Lawrence-Weiss. Shara’s business, ‘Personal Child Stories’ creates custom children’s books using their personal photos and a custom-written text. Read and be Inspired by her business success story !!!!

Can you tell us a bit about your business (personal child stories) – How did you come up with the idea and what do you do ?

Personal Child Stories was born through a medical challenge with my son (http://www.personalchildstories.com/our_story.php). Just ten days after his first birthday his eye had to be removed. He was then given a prosthetic eye and had to wear glasses in order to protect his one seeing one.

I created two books using his personal photographs, in order to redirect specific behaviors (removing his eye to chew on it and taking his glasses off and sometimes breaking them). Rather than focus on what he was doing wrong, the books focused on what he could do that was right: to leave the eye in and only remove it when needed and to keep his glasses on in order to protect his eye. The text was written in a positive fashion, praising him for making the right choices.

I read the books with my son for about three weeks after which time the behavior had adjusted. Most research will tell us that a behavior can be modified in about three weeks. The books did seem to follow this theory.

Over the years I had the idea to create more books using custom photos and custom written text (based on my previous writing/freelance experience). I’ve worked with children for over 16 years and I’m earning a degree in Elementary Education. I put my varying experiences together in order to create this business.

I now write and design custom books for children all over the country (and even internationally). Every book contains their personal photographs and a custom written text that focuses on the positive attributes of their character and/or situation. Book themes range from counting and the alphabet to name recognition, remembering a vacation or celebrating a new sibling in the family. Books can also be created as keepsakes – remembering a loved one or pet, etc.

Anything goes! One of my long-term goals is to offer custom book services to school districts, aiding their Special Needs departments.

Once you had the idea, how did you go about getting your business up and running (the aim of the question is to help people who have business ideas but don’t know what to do next)?

The first thing I did was create a list. The list consisted of my short term and long term goals. I analyzed numerous other small businesses in order to understand what they did to make things work…or what they did wrong that made things flop. I typed up an outline for what I wanted my website to contain: the information, the images, the name of my business, the tag line, etc. What did I want to convey? Who was my target audience? Who would buy these books? Why? Who would they benefit?

I wrote all of these things down in order to go through the mental steps and process of planning for the long-haul. Starting a business is so complex and there are so many items to consider from the grand scheme to the tiny details and everything in between. I made a point of jotting these things down, one by one, until my plan unfolded clearly in my own mind. I was then ready to move forward and implement those plans.

What is the best advice you received about running your business ?

My husband warned me early on that most businesses fail quickly because the owner expects quick results. He has owned a successful business for about 20 years now. So I knew I had to listen to his advice J He explained to me that most small businesses are said to take 3-5 years before turning any profit. In other words, don’t give up easily. He encouraged me to start this business based on the full awareness that it would take time to establish and get the word out; time to build a customer base and a functioning word-of-mouth circulation.

As the old saying goes: “Slow and steady wins the race.”

Someone else shared another piece of invaluable advice as well: Above all else, do not start a business if you need the complete support of friends and family. More than likely, you will not get that. Some friends and some family members will show their support while others will not. Start a business because it’s what YOU want to do and for no other reason. You will then become the machine that drives your business into success.

You balance work and family…Any time management tips for other business mothers?

Sure! Figure out your own best time to work: morning, afternoon or evening. Try to get as much work done during that time as you can. Leave the other times open for your spouse and children. Always leave a day open for spontaneous fun with your family, also; don’t try to work 7 days a week. We all need rest and a time to revamp and think. It’s during times of silence and fun, for me, that new ideas are born!

How do you promote your business?

I advertise on MommyPerks.com and on varying other websites. Most of what I do is trade: trading links, services, products, reviews, etc. I have a facebook account and a decal on the back of my car. I belong to a reporter network and respond to queries if and when they are appropriate to my business.

My main focus is to always keep my ears and ears open for any and every possibility. There are so many great opportunities out there – we just have to be on the lookout!

What is the most rewarding thing about your business?

The feedback I get on the books, by far. I love getting thank you notes in the mail or thank you emails after a book has been opened. Some children sleep with their books at night while others take them to school for show-and-tell. I love every one of these stories and I save every thank you card and note.

Finally, your five keys to success?

Hmmm…just five, eh?

Start a business only if your heart is truly in it.

Do not count on family and friends to be the driving force of your business; work hard to get there with…or without…them.

If you want good SEO results, do NOT buy a template website (Vista Print, Windows, etc).

Be patient and understand that all good things take time: slow and steady wins the race.

Do not expect to succeed right away. If one idea fails, try again. Keep trying until you get the formula right !

Innovative Business Ideas - Meet Rachel Jones Of Totseat

My guest today is Rachel Jones. Rachel is the creator of ‘Totseat’. Totseat is a harness that can convert any adult chair into an instant high chair. Totseat comes in various different colors and designs. Totseat has become very popular with mums and is now sold in more than 15 countries. Rachel was the runner up in the Business Mum of the year award in 2008 (in UK). Read and Be Inspired !!!

A lot of moms have ideas but only a few make the idea a reality. Once you had the idea what were some of the steps you took to get your product developed ?

I made the first Totseat from the lining of my tartan wedding dresss – stapling it together because I can’t sew! I then enlisted the help of a friend (who can sew) to make what became the first prototype.

Feedback from everyone I met prompted some more Totseats to be made (by the same friend) and various design options to be tested out – notably how best to make it fit every chair possible! After 19 prototypes, 900 chairs and 23 families, I approached a factory in Lancashire, England … and we’ve gone from there. I took a prototype to John Lewis, they loved it and we’ve gone from there !

Looking back, what would you have done differently in the start-up phase & why ?

I think we did what we could with the resources we had. Had I won the lottery life the launch phase might have been a bit quicker !

You have won multiple awards for your innovative product. Your product has been received well by the market. What is next for Totseat? Where would you like to see your company two years from now ?

We are thrilled by how well Totseat is doing, being for sale in 17 or so countries now – which in less than three years since launch is great. We will continue to design funky fabrics and to ensure it’s the safest, most adaptable fabric chair harness available. In terms of what’s next, it’s more translations!

What is one business tool you cannot survive without ?

Mobile email. Fantastic. Whether on the bus, waiting for the supper to cook, or walking to work, time is saved, opportunities are garnered and friends and family are always with you.

Did you have a business plan when you started out? How important is a business plan ?

Yes we did and we still use it. I think a business plan is crucial for a few things and less crucial for others !

How do you balance raising a family and running a business – any tips ?

Balancing acts are subjective! I make sure I’m at the school gates three days a week and waking hours with my daughter are precious and absolutely lived to the full. Once she’s in bed, work begins again. Often far into the night – but with Totseats for sale all over the world it’s often a necessity in terms of time zones and talking to customers! Any tips I have would be prioritise what really matters to you and not lose sight of those priorities, whatever the weather: to eat well; excise as and when you can; to love those who love you and keep you sane, and to always have a book on the go for a bit of escapism.

Finally, your five keys to success?

Not sure I’ve got there yet but:

Being able to: innovate, prioritise, recruit those better than oneself, know what you don’t know and not be afraid to ask for help, and to be able to laugh.

Successful Baby Ideas - Meet Lenie Ramos Of Little Twig

My guest today is Lenie Ramos. Lenie’s business, Little Twig, sells natural organic baby care products. Since its launch, Little Twig has gone from strength to strength. It has a huge celebrity following as well. Read and Be Inspired !!!

What were you doing before starting ‘Little Twig’? What was the reason behind starting ‘Little Twig’? When did you start ‘Little Twig’?

I started little twig in 2003 when I was in between careers. I was previously a graphic design in the television industry. I wanted do something different in my life that was positive to my family, community and environment. What turned me onto doing a children’s line was my niece.

She was very sensitive to bubble bath. I bought her a mass produced product that my sister would not allow her to use because of the ingredients in them. I didn’t have children myself, so I was intrigued by my sister’s concerns. At that point I began doing my research and found that there was a need for a clean and fresh natural product for children.

What were a couple of main challenges you faced when you started out and how did you overcome them ?

When beginning my company I didn’t know what it took to start the company, what parent’s needed because I wasn’t a parent myself, and how to begin.

How does a typical day look like for you ?

I always begin my day spending some quality time with my family. I then start of my days doing company errands, post office then to the bank then to the office.

As I sit down, I create my list of things to do as my employees begin to line up with questions. Each day I have goals to achieve, whether reviewing previous concerns, internal meetings, sales, or marketing. Depending on what the month is then my goals change. Overall, it’s always what our numbers are and making sure they are meeting our goals as a team.

What is the most rewarding thing about your business ?

The most rewarding part of my business is the ability to conduct business that makes a difference to our environment and our community.

You have stockists/distributors in many different countries. If you can give one tip to moms who are trying to expand the distributorship of their products, what would that be ?

My tip to other mothers, look for partners who believe in your values and grow with them.

What is one business tool you cannot survive without ?

One tool I can’t live without is my book of to-dos. I write down my goals for each day to keep me focused. With two kids, it’s always best to write everything down. I am sure most mom’s can relate.

Finally, your five keys to success?

Find key employees you believe in.

Hire slow fire fast

Know your numbers everyday.

Learn everything!!!

Always evaluate each decision by cost, effectiveness, and return on investment.

Denise Devine, the creator of High Energy Froose Drinks talks to DotComMothers and shares her business success story

My guest today is Denise Devine. Denise Devine is the creator of Froose drinks. When Denise’s kids were toddlers she was concerned about the lack of nutrition in all the kids juices. She saw a market gap, realised the market potential and created a nutritious health drink for kids. The brand of the drinks is called Froose. All the ingredients used in Froose drinks are organic.

On her website, Denise says this about her product – ‘The nutritional profile of Froose® makes it an ideal beverage to drink through out the day and a great “drinkable snack” for finicky eaters or busy children who won’t take the time to stop activities to eat or when they are “on-the-go”.’ Read and Be Inspired By her business success story.

How did you come up with the idea for Froose drinks?

When my son was a toddler I was working for a Fortune 100 food company. Nick was a very thirsty kid who only would drink juice.

This was before the clinical studies were published that confirmed problems with young children drinking too much fruit juice and before Pediatricians were warning parents to limit even 100% juice consumption to 4-6 oz. per day, my motherly instincts knew that my son’s juice habit was causing him to be both a finicky eater and was providing too many empty calories. I began to do a lot of research and I became passionate about children’s nutrition.

I was an executive in a large food company who was a frustrated consumer myself because I could not find what I wanted for my own children so I decided to create a beverage that would appeal to my son by “sneaking” in whole food nutrition to a juice-like format so that he would think he was getting the juice that he loved but the nutrition he needed without the empty calories of juice.

I understand you have a patent on this product…Can you tell me what makes this product so unique and different ?

We discovered a way to incorporate whole food (i.e., grains or vegetables) into a number of non-solid formats. We built a new beverage “from the ground up”. We did not start with juice and add soluble fiber, but rather started with the whole food and found a way to keep all the nutritional elements , including the soluble and insoluble elements along with the micronutrients, in a drinkable form that we then used the fruit to flavor. In addition to beverages, we have also developed a number of other products such as frozen confections, puddings, etc. using the patents.

Once you had the idea, what were some of the next steps you took to get the product manufactured ?

I contracted with food chemists to execute my ideas and I worked with Universities that had food science departments and pilot plant facilities to do test runs and scale up the product for commercial production. I used my contacts from the food industry to find the right technical people and also to locate a contract manufacturing facility that had the right processing and packaging capabilities for my product.

Can adults have Froose as well ?

Absolutely! The whole grain nutrition and good source of fiber in each 4 oz. serving of Froose is helpful for anyone who is interested in good nutrition. The grains and fiber in Froose are heart healthy and create satiety which is very helpful for weight maintenance along with its low calorie, low sugar profile.

What has been your biggest hurdle so far ?

Because we were interested in addressing nutrition for young children, it was important to use smaller size aseptic boxes. There is very little manufacturing capacity in this packaging format so we had to delay the product launch until more capacity came on line. Now we have a contract with both a west coast and an east coast manufacturing facility.

What is the most enjoyable part of your day ?

Every day I receive calls and emails from parents who tell us their kids love Froose. Parents are very happy to have a truly nutritious and convenient alternative to juice. I love to talk to and email daily with parents.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

I call it my five “P’s”…..Passion, Persistence, Patience, Product Quality & Innovation and Prayer (Spiritual Reflection)

Mabel's Labels - Personalized Clothing Labels For Kids, was started by 4 entrepreneurial moms. Read Their Story.

My guest today is Julie Cole of Mabel’s Labels. Mabel’s Labels was started by 4 entrepreneurial moms. After a lot of research and testing, these moms created fun, durable labels for stuff kids lose. There are two types of labels – clothing labels and sticky labels. All the labels are customized with the child’s name. The labels are also dishwasher, microwave and laundry safe.

Their company has been growing remarkably well and their popularity and growth has led to a lot of media coverage. Read and be Inspired.

How did you come up with the idea for the business ?

We are busy moms who were getting frustrated by the amount of baby and kid stuff that was going missing when our kids would head off to daycare, playgroup and school.

Their bottles, hats, sippy cups, clothing, books and toys were getting lost or mixed up. When I had a play date with my business partners, it would often finish with ‘is this your box of wipes?” or “whose bottle is this?” We knew that there was a product missing from the market. We did not like to use masking tape and markers on our children’s belongings – we knew we could do better than that !

Once you had the idea, what process did you follow to get your product developed?

We knew we had to find a material that would be durable. We were shocked at how difficult it was to find a material that could withstand the dishwasher and microwave, and also be kid proof !

On top of spending a lot of time researching technology and testing material, we were consumed with creating our business plan, formalizing our partnership and creating a marketing plan. Those early days were very busy and exhilarating times.

I understand Mabel’s Labels is run by four mompreneurs – Yourself, Cynthia Esp, Julie Ellis and Tricia Mumby. Now a very frank question here – How do you all work well together in a business environment…What are your tips for partnership companies ?

Most experts would advise against having four partners. On top of being business partners, we are all also related. Cynthia and I are sisters, and we met our other two business partners at University. They went on to marry our brother and young uncle. There are challenges in having four business partners. We always have four different opinions coming to the table and while it can be feisty, it is always fun!

Certainly you need to have the skills to appropriately manage conflict and strong communication is key. Having a large partnership has many advantages as well. It has allowed us to divide the workload and the risk! There is no question – our company would not have grown so quickly without four business partners.

What is the best advice you have ever received about running a business?

Someone once told us to ignore anyone who told us we were crazy. Luckily, that advice was given very early in the process because a lot of people thought we were crazy! We left our professional and well paying jobs based on an idea. While our husbands and families were supportive, there were certainly times they wondered whether starting a business was a good idea! We were also told that we should never neglect our customer service.

You can spend all the money in the world on advertising and product development, but you have to be there for your customers – responding promptly and exceeding expectations.

You guys seem to have adopted all the modern ‘internet marketing’ concepts very well. I noticed that a lot of blogs (especially the mommy bloggers) have blogged about your products. You seem to have a successful blogger outreach program…Plus you also have an affiliate program. How important is this for your business?

This is paramount. Word of Mouth is the best marketing we have.

Our loyal customers have been amazing at spreading the word about Mabel’s Labels. So many Mamas are now online doing facebook, blogging, posting on message boards, etc. This has made the whole concept of Word of Mouth marketing even more important.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job ?

There are many rewarding aspects of running a business. We have started something and been there nurturing it and watching it grow. We often say Mabel is like a daughter! I love the connection we have with our customers who, like us, are busy with small children. It has also been very rewarding to hire employees as the business has grown. We now have our own Mabel community and culture in our office and it is a delight to be able to provide employment opportunities to people.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

Use your social capital. You know people who can help you. Do not be afraid to ask for advice;

Don’t get so busy working ‘in” the business and forget that it is your job to work “on” the business;

If you don’t love it, don’t do it. This applies to everything – how an ad looks, how a phrase in your brochure sounds, to the actual work you do everyday.

Know that sometimes you have to put the cart before the horse if you want to grow. That can be very frightening, but if you don’t take risks, your business will not move to the next level;

While you may be the ‘boss’, treat everyone else like they are your boss – your customers, suppliers, employees, etc. If you are not completely accountable to them, you won’t be the boss for long!

Interview with Lisa Koba - Lisa is a mompreneur and runs a successful business selling unique leather footwear for babies.

My guest today is Lisa Koba of Cheeky Little Soles. Lisa sells unique, top quality, stylish and reasonably priced leather shoes for babies. These are soft, stay-on and non slip shoes – ideal for 0 to 2 years old. I have browsed through her range on her website and they look very cute – adorable!!! These shoes have been received extremely well by the market. Lisa has now expanded her product range into ladies leather slippers, convenient leather bibs and polar boots.

The leather bibs are easy to clean and they also have a handy magnetic clasp that won’t pull or tangle hair, can be stuck and stored on the fridge and are easy to keep clean. Read and Be Inspired…..

How did you come up with the idea for your business ?

Cheeky Little Soles began early in 2005, when I searched for a way to keep my 6 month old daughters socks on and to stop her from slipping on our floorboards at our home in her early attempts at learning to stand.

I saw a gap in the market for top quality, stylish and reasonably priced soft soled leather baby shoes. Not one to sit back, I set about designing my own range.

After many months of research, designing and sourcing, the first range of Cheeky Little Soles footwear emerged onto the market. The response to the range, both from customers and retailers was fantastic, Mums and bubs throughout Australia and New Zealand just adored Cheeky Little Soles.

Can you briefly tell us what you did to take your business from idea to production stage ?

Once I had the idea that I wanted to design and manufacture baby shoes I put together an extensive business plan which included market analysis, finance analysis, marketing strategies etc. I had never prepared a business plan before, but it was a learning experience and I drew on lots of different resources including joining business forums.

Next I sourced the world the world for manufacturers to make the product. I came to a lot of dead ends, but at each dead end I asked if they could refer me onto any other contacts they felt maybe able to assist me. From there I had a selection of my designs made into samples. From there it was a process of elimination and negotiation. Negotiating can be complex when you are dealing with different countries, but there are resources out there that can assist.

It’s not easy juggling business and two small children. Can you give us some of your time management tips?

I think the main key to time management is being super organized and having supportive people surrounding you. I am always working on my ‘things to do list’. I also have a yearly schedule which includes deadlines for designing, manufacturing, advertising, trade shows etc.

Being a mum and running your own business is no 9-5 job. I work at any and all hours of the day, 7 days a week. I work whenever is suitable for both myself and my family.

What is the best advice you ever received about running a business ?

“Work smarter not harder”, which is now my motto. When running a business you are expected to be a ‘jack of all trades’ and it is very difficult to be good at everything. So in working smarter I have outsourced any tasks that I felt someone else could do better or more effectively or efficiently.

In the initial days did you ever want to give up ?

No, never. I absolutely love my business, the products I bring to the public and what I do. Sure we all have our good days and our bad days, but if you are driven, passionate and make smart business choices, giving up is never an option.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

Be passionate about what you do

Be organized

Believe in yourself and your products

Set and achieve your goals

And of course work smarter not harder

Interview with a mom who sells Embroidered and Personalized Burp Cloths.

My guest today is Sheila McGoldrick. Sheila is a ‘mom inventor’. This is how her business story began – Her three children suffered from acid reflux. Sheila was allergic to a preservative found in most of the baby toiletries. This allergy caused the skin on her hands to open up and form blisters. When the kids spit (when they burped) touched the skin on her hands, it caused an extremely painful burning sensation. Initially Sheila did not know what was happening but after a visit to an allergy doctor, she found out what the reason was.

She then found a solution to this pain by inventing the burpee cloths. She donated a few of these to a local hospital. The response was extremely positive. This prompted her to take her business further – Today she offers burpees in various colors and patterns. She even offers embroidered and personalized burpee cloths. Apart from burp cloths she also sells diaper cakes. Read and be inspired….

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

The reason for inventing this product was due to having an allergic reaction to a preservative found in my children’s body washes and wipes. This preservative caused my hands to blister and break open badly. My babies were HUGE spitters and I always managed to wear the spit-up on my hands and everywhere else as well.

On day, after no longer being able to stand the pain of constantly washing my hands, a picture of this style burp cloth popped into my head and I immediately started working on a prototype.

What was your main motivation behind starting your own business ?

My main motivation behind my invention was to save myself from any further pain I was in due to wearing spit-up. My main motivation behind starting my own business was to help other parents with the same or similar problem of constantly wearing spit-up. If this product helped me so much I was sure that it would help others.

I have visited your site and I love all the wonderful and different kinds of patterns you have. Can you tell us how a ‘burpee’ works?

Slide your hand into the protective pocket leaving your thumb out.

Cradle baby’s face with covered hand.

Lean baby forward, gently patting and rubbing to help baby burp.

Now, when baby spits up, it will run onto the Handy Burpee keeping your hand and baby free from spit-up.

You can continue to bottle/breastfeed your baby while this unique burp cloth is still on your hand. It won’t get in the way and is always ready for use.

Of course, the Handy Burpee can be put over your shoulder as well, so whether burping baby on your lap or over your shoulder, our unique burp cloth will keep you and baby free from spit-up. Handy Burpee is made big enough for a man or woman’s hand and can be used by both right and left-handed people.

How is a ‘burpee’ different from traditional burp cloths?

This burpee is so different because it has a protective covering for your hand that is made specifically for protection. No other burp cloth on the market helps protect you in this way. The towel like material that hangs down also protects baby as well from becoming wet and wearing their own spit-up.

This burp cloth has a patent pending and is mom-invented.

In the initial days what were some of the problems you faced and how did you overcome them?

I remember in the VERY beginning I contacted a company that was resourceful in helping small businesses get started. I remember speaking to a woman from the company who had pretty much shot down my entire product and dream for my product. I was truly upset and it did get me down for a few days. Then I realized that “I” believed in my product and it was up to me to get it out to the public and prove that it is an extremely useful burpee.

I realized that she made me work harder to prove how wonderful it is and I will never give up if I truly believe in myself and my product. You will run into those who are pessimistic about your idea and you have to learn to learn from them and ignore the downside of their comments. Do not give up because a few people tell you it is no good!
Believe in yourself !

Being a mom and managing a business is tough. Have you got any tips for our readers on time management?

Hmmm, time management is tough. Honestly, the time that I seem to give up is sleep time. I try to work on almost everything that has to do with running my business when my children are sleeping. If I need to hit the hay early, I try to schedule a certain amount of time during the day to work on my business and not All day.

That would take away too much time from my children. At night, when it is quiet, is my best bet. There are some days where I don’t have a chance to work on it at all. Life happens and I try to remember what is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in my life. And definitely my family comes first.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

Belive in yourself

Networking – you have to educate the world about your product and what better way to do that than networking

Stay true and honest and don’t become GREEDY!

Be open and motivated to continue to learn each day about new ideas and ways to run your business

Stay optimistic – You never know what is coming your way around the next corner.

My guest today is Penny Seto. Penny Seto’s small business, Milk Factory sells unique clothes for kids and infants. Penny and her business partner started their business because they felt there was a need for clothes for kids on the go.
I visited your website and browsed through all the various products you have on there. I think your products are very innovative. Can you tell us a bit about what makes Milk Factory’s outfits different and unique?

In a day where health and wellness is vital, we are happy to be able to provide a collection of high-performance gear that is functional and fashionable, and is built to last under everyday or extreme conditions – that is, life with ‘kids on the go’.

Our Quick Wick Activewear is made from a quick-drying fabric that, unlike cotton, draws moisture away from sensitive skin, and keeps kids cool and comfortable.

Lightweight and breathable, Quick Wick offers excellent sun-protection (UPF 40) in the summer, and provides a layer of warmth in the winter (like thermal underwear).Quick Wick Activewear is designed with no-itch, flat-lock stitching, is wrinkle and stain resistant, and machine washable. All Milk Factory products are made in Canada.

How did you come up with idea for this business?

While on maternity leave in 2003, I met my co-founding partner, Tomi, at the local community centre’s baby group drop-in. Afterward, we’d head out for a walk but wouldn’t get very far before one of the babies had to be changed or fed. It was while we were sitting on our damp fleece blankets in the park that Tomi said she wished she could find a bigger blanket with nylon on the back, that hers was barely big enough for her and her baby.

I wished for clothing for my son that would dry quickly and help protect his skin from the drool and spit-up soaked bibs and cotton onesies that would leave rashes on his chest.

What was the next step after you had the idea? I mean what were the next few steps you took to convert this idea into a business?

Having connections in the manufacturing industry made the process a little quicker than for most but everything else took some learning. We knew what we liked and what we didn’t and used a basic design approach – simple, clean and fresh lines and sporty, fashion-forward colors. The clothes had to be unisex in sizing and long-wearing so that families could feel that, not only were they were getting a great product, but also great value.I took our ideas to a local factory and had samples made.

We tested on the best testers we could find – our very own baby group. We gathered feedback and used the prototypes ourselves. During this time, we both went back to work full-time. It didn’t take long for us to see that working for someone else, limited the flexibility that we both wanted for our young families. We dove in head first, split the responsibilities and got the business set-up including financing by way of a line of credit, quit our jobs and launched a month later with a full collection of gear and an online shopping site.

To make the biggest impression we could afford, we exhibited at a popular local consumer baby fair and found ourselves overwhelmed by the response.

Can you give us some tips on running a successful online store?

Having just relaunched our site to include a full e-commerce shopping experience, I will be the first to admit, I am not an expert on the web! Running an online store has been a huge learning experience in an area that was quite new to me. The biggest success in the launch was in the trust that I had with my designer. Communication is key if you want an end result that you will be happy with. Ask questions and make sure that you are clear about what you are getting. I was very focused about what I wanted the site to represent and it all came back to the original focus we used for our product designs – simple, clean and fresh lines and sporty, fashion-forward colors.

Be clear about what you are selling, answer customer’s questions before they ask by providing accurate and clear information, and make it easy for customers to get what they want with as little effort as possible. A little extra effort on the customer service end goes a really long way ! A blog is an invaluable tool that will help drive traffic to your site, increase interest in your business and offer a well rounded shopping experience. I hear on a regular basis from customers that they love shopping on the site and come back just to see what’s fresh and new.

What is your most popular product ?

Overall, the performance features of the Quick Wick Activewear are providing amazing results for infants and toddlers and this is showing especially true in our infant styles with an almost even split across the hat, bodysuit and pant. A large number of our sales are co-ordinating outfits and often in the form of a gift pack. With sun-protection being so important these days, the UPF 40 rating gives parents the peace of mind of added protection that a long sleeve onesie provides for their baby.

And, the wicking properties keep baby’s skin cool and dry, helping to eliminate heat and drool rashes. The easy-on, easy-off infant leisure pants have proven to be an indispensable pant for easy diaper changes and potty training. People have a hard time resisting the adorable beanie hat, often buying it in a variety of colors that all the kids in the family can share.

If you had a chance to do it all over again (in business) is there anything you would do differently ?

I try to live without regret because everything I have done has gotten me where I am today. Staying focused on my goals has always been a challenge and I am working harder at keeping them finely tuned and in the forefront of my mind.

Finally, your five keys to business success?

Set a goal/business plan and STAY FOCUSED.

Believe in your products and stay true to your brand – don’t try to be everything to everyone.

Ask questions and share with others – networking and sharing opens a world of knowledge and support that will boggle your mind.

Trust yourself.

LOVE what you do!

Read this interview with two work at home moms who have built a successful business selling food related products catering to babies.

I have two guests today (two sisters) – Joan Ahlers and Cheryl Tallman. Sisters Joan & Cheryl started Fresh Baby out of innovation and need. Joanie already had 4 children when, across the country (USA), her sister Cheryl needed advice and help with her first. The answer was Fresh Baby.

This company develops and sells products which help busy mothers to make feeding their babies easier. The product line includes homemade baby food kits, baby food cookbooks, baby food and breast milk storage trays, breastfeeding reminders, and child development diaries.

Fresh Baby’s products have proved to be a huge success in the market place. Due to its success, the company has received huge media coverage in a number of parenting magazines. In 2004 ‘Entrepreneur Magazine’ selected Fresh Baby as the company to watch. Read and get inspired.

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Joan: “Our mom was a natural mom, we were all breastfed and she always encouraged us to eat healthy foods. I remember when I started my first baby on real food, I bought a few jars of baby food at the store came home and opened a jar of peas, only to find that it smelled horrible and the color was just nasty – I assumed it was bad. I tossed it and opened another only to discover the same thing. I picked up the phone and called mom for her advice. She told me it would be easy to make my own baby food, just steam and puree fresh produce. This simple suggestion sent me on my path to make baby food for all four of my children and I got better at it with each one.”

Cheryl: “Joanie had four kids and by the time I had my first one, she had a whole system for making baby food. I was a working mom in New York City and I was like no way, I do not have time. But she gave me a 5 minute pitch on how healthy fresh food was, how easy it was to make baby food and that it took less than 30 minutes a week. So I trusted my little sister and I was so surprised – she was right! I came from a marketing background and thought, ‘why don’t we package something so other people can do this too?’ People do know that fresh is best, they just might not know how to do it or how little time it takes. This system is so easy any parent can do it, and I’m not supermom! Plus when I saw other parents with kids who struggled with weight problems, I noticed that they did not make their own food, but rather did the jarred thing, and made a lot of un-healthy and processed food choices for the kids.

Our pediatrician agreed with me that Fresh was best, and that if I kept it up, my kid would be a much better off. He was right on the money, and speaking of money it was a lot cheaper to make our own food as well.”Together Joanie and I started Fresh Baby so that all parents can have the option to make their baby food and enjoy all the benefits without having to re-invent the system for doing it.”

What was your main motivation behind starting your own business?

Our main motivations for starting Fresh Baby were and still are to make a difference and to make money. Fresh Baby is 100% committed to supporting new parents in reducing their child’s risk of obesity by promoting the development of healthy eating habits from the first bite of solid foods. We design high-quality, simple-to-use products that enable new parents to be successful.

Achieving work life balance is always tough for a mother with a business. How do you plan your day? What are your time management tips for mothers with businesses who are trying to juggle work and home lives ?

Starting a new business is like having another baby. It requires a significant amount of attention. Balancing family and business is a key and finding time for both is difficult. Here are few time management tips that I have found useful:

Plan for the week, not the day: I find it easier to plan my week, not my day. There is just not enough time in day to accomplish much, and you never know what might happen in a given day to prevent you from accomplishing your goals and activities. If find it much simpler and less stressful to you set goals and activities for the week, there is a lot more time for accomplishment.

Be Flexible: In today’s virtual workplace, there are no standard hours. In fact, some companies encourage employees to work when they are most productive. The important thing is to get the job done. I apply this same approach to managing the balance of family and work. I’ll work late at night to write our newsletter or test recipes, but I don’t write my newsletter instead of reading a bedtime book to my son.

Set Family Time Priorities: I set priorities for family time and respect it. For example, I enjoy and appreciate family meals, they are a family priority. I leave my schedule open for shopping, preparing and enjoying family meals every day. If someone wants to schedule an appointment during this time, I simply say that I am booked and I promptly suggest an alternative time.

Accept help from your spouse, partner or caregivers: Mom’s who start their own businesses also want to be “Super Mom”. This does not mean that you need to do it ALL by yourself. My husband picks our son up from school everyday – my son loves the “daddy” time. I gladly accept his help, because it gives me time to get my work done. It also makes my husband feel good too. This approach is good for the whole family.

A lot of parents complain about their child being a picky eater. Have you got any tips for them?

All toddlers are picky eaters. It may surprise you to find out that this behavior has very little to do with the taste of food and is mostly about wanting control a situation. Isn’t it always about control? Most toddlers learn very early that eating is very easy to control and it is likely to get a response out of you. This makes it fun (for your kid, not you)!
Here are the two big challenges for you.

1: DO NOT give in to this behavior and allow your child to make food choices

2: DO NOT begin offering bland, unhealthy foods at meals as a replacement for healthy, flavorful foods. This can be a difficult time, but it is “just a phase” and with a few strategies you can be successful in keeping your toddler on the path to being a healthy eater.

This can be a difficult time, but it is “just a phase” and with a few strategies you can be successful in keeping your toddler on the path to being a healthy eater. Here are few tips to help you out:

Act at the first signs: Picky eating habits form quickly and they will be hard to break. The best strategy is to prevent the habits from forming. At the very first signs of finicky behavior, be prepares to respond.

Include them: Children are more likely to eat something that they have helped make, so get your children involved in preparing meals. You can also take them shopping and teach them how to find and select foods. Involving your kids in making decisions reinforces that you care about their opinion and want to make things that they like. Instead of asking “Do you want broccoli for dinner?” offer choices like “Do you want broccoli or cauliflower for dinner?”. Simple choices make your child feel like they are the one in control.

Set Realistic Goals: It is not likely that your child will eat a whole serving of food that they claim not to like. Instead start off with small goals of one bite and work your way up from there. Be consistent, firm, and don’t give up: Use the same tactics at each and every meal. Remind your child of the goal and offer plenty of encouragement. Don’t give in to stubbornness.

Don’t rush meals: It is quite likely that your child is a slow eater, and this is a good habit to encourage. Offer your child plenty of time to eat a meal.

Praise: Even if it is just one nibble, congratulate your child. A little nibble is a big deal.

Be a good role model: I can’t say this enough! It is plain and simple. You cannot expect to raise children that eat a good variety of healthy foods if you do not. This fact goes for all adults who sit at the table with your children. Your toddler learns from watching you.

And a final word of advice – try to be patient some kids get through this phase easier than others.

How can your products help a mother? Can you give some examples/information to our readers ?

We all know that homemade fresh food for your baby is best, but who has the time to figure it out? This is what Fresh Baby does. Our signature product is the So Easy Baby Food Kit provides a simple, hassle-free system for making baby food in less them 30 minutes a week. We’ve done all the time-consuming research and eliminated all the guess work. We have made it “So Easy to be successful”! We get letters from customers all the time. Here are two that came in this week:

“First of all, thank you for your book and all the heart and work that went into creating your products. I never made my own baby food for my 1st child, now 3 years old, but I am now for my 2nd child, now 9 mos.
old. Thanks to your clear and simple book teaching me how. A fellow mom friend introduced me to your book as she was preparing all her baby’s meals from the very beginning. She showed me your book as well as some others, but I found yours to be the simplest, and most do-able.”

“Thanks again. And I did want to say I have truly enjoyed the recipe book. It is quite easy to follow. My mother-in-law’s friend distributes “healthy” products to various stores and when we were out there visiting my in-laws she gave me the book and a tray. I never thought I would make my own baby food, let alone breastfeed, but it has worked out so nicely. At nine months my son is busy exploring everything and truly enjoys each of his meals. I am definitely happy that I decided to go naturally with everything; I am blessed with a very happy, content son.
Thanks so much.”

In business, what are the most valuable lessons you have learned over time ?

My husband’s favorite animal is the turtle, because he never gets anywhere without sticking his neck out. The biggest lesson that I have learned is that as business owner I must be a turtle.

Finally, your five keys to success ?

Be Honest

Be Responsive

Be Positive

Be Approachable

Be Receptive
